The Club was started in 2001 when a group of like-minded riders in the Essex/Suffolk border areas wanted to form a group which would actively encourage and develop the “grass roots” riders as well as those who are more competitive. Their idea was obviously a good one as Colne Valley continues to be a very active and successful Riding Club. Colne Valley Riding Club are affiliated to the British Riding Clubs organisation and through this members can enjoy the assurance that the administration of the club and their competitive and training activities will be to the standards required of an affiliated riding club.
The Committee principally organises a series of activities and competitions as the backbone of the Colne Valley year, including dressage competitions, clear round cross country days and a “stress free” fun ride. These all have proved very popular, especially our dressage competitions which competitors consistently report as being friendly and well run.
In addition to the regular calendar events, Colne Valley members have the opportunity to suggest new activities, and any member with a good idea will be supported by the Committee in making that a reality. For example, the hugely popular annual camp has gone from strength to strength since being started off by two members in 2007. The vast number of activities which Colne Valley have enjoyed have included clinics, talks and demonstrations (one of these involving the unravelling of a life sized model of a horse’s intestine!), quizzes, hound rides – and evenings in the pub.
Help from members in organising and running our club activities is very much encouraged . All those who help out generally have a good time, and their efforts are much appreciated by the committee.
Colne Valley Riding Club encourage the participation of members in BRC team competitions and on many occasions Colne Valley teams have qualified for, and done well at, national championships. At the outset the Colne Valley reputation was very much as a dressage oriented club, however in recent years members have developed their jumping skills along with their flatwork and the club is now very well represented in showjumping and horse trials team competitions.
The grass roots rider is still very much at the heart of Colne Valley Riding Club and there are many opportunities for club members to participate in training which is encouraging and accessible to most horse and rider combinations. Many members have had their first taste of dressage, cross country or showjumping through Colne Valley clinics and low key competitions, and the Fun Ride is very popular with any rider and their horse or pony to enjoy a pleasant off road hack.
The Colne Valley Riding Club is democratically run with an elected Committee and a formal but lively Annual General Meeting held at the end of each year. Trophies are also awarded in many categories, not only for those who do well at their competitive discipline, but also include trophies for the member who has shown most improvement, the “best turned out” and for “help on the ground” – there are usually a few pleasant surprises!
The Colne Valley Riding Club Chairman and Committee hope that you enjoy our website and will welcome enquires from potential new members.
